There are a lot of law firms out there and it can be really difficult knowing which one to go with. There are quite a few ways to help you to choose.

Obviously it will be more useful if you choose a local company as you will need to visit them. It may be worth travelling though if you have a personal recommendation for a company that is a bit further away. Getting a personal recommendation is the best way to find a good company but make sure that the person who recommended them used them for a similar thing than you need them for. If you do not have a personal recommendation then you will need to do some research yourself.

It is likely that you will have quite a few local firms who might be able to help you and so it is important that you go and speak to them all. Make a free appointment with them, find out if they can take on your case and find out how much they will charge you to do that. It is a good idea to talk to them because it will give you an idea of what they will be like.

If you find it hard to make an appointment because they are so busy, take that as a good sign. If they are friendly and helpful then that is obviously another good sign. If they are very cheap then that may not be such a good sign – it may be that they have to lower their prices to attract more customers. Paying a bit more for a good service is always a good thing, especially when it comes to something as important as finding a good lawyer.

Trust your gut instinct as well. If you walk in to a company, talk to a few people and are impressed with their professionalism then this is likely to be a good sign.
