Many people feel that layers are overpaid and do not do much to deserve their pay. However, if you understand more about how much training they have to get, then it may be easier to understand why they charge so much.
The first part of a lawyers training is to get a law degree. This will give them all of the background information in order to know what to do to practice law. It is likely that at this stage you will decide whether you want to become a barrister or a solicitor. A solicitor gives legal advice and will tend to practice in a specialist area such as family or media. Barristers will also specialise but they tend to work more in courts.
They will then need to study the Graduate diploma in Law which will take one year full-time or two years part-time. Then another course will need to be completed which takes the same amount of time again and is called a Legal Practice course. Lastly they need to do a Training contract which includes a Professional skills course as well as two years training in a practice. They will be based at a practice and they will help the trainee as they see fit.
This means that in total they will need 7 years training before they are able to practice law on their own. It is therefore understandable why they charge so much money, as they have so much knowledge and experience. It is good to know that someone who you could be relying on to change your life has so much knowledge.
So do not begrudge paying them the fee that you do. It is something which they have earned over their years of training and it means that they are fully qualified to represent you or advise you as best they can.
