A lawyer is normally just considered to be someone who can represent you in court. However, it is a little more complicated than that. Depending on the country you are in, the term lawyer can mean different things and so if you need the services of a lawyer it is important to find out exactly what type of person you need and make sure that you get the right one.

Many people choose not to use the services of a lawyer when they are in court but it is important to realise what they do in order to understand why they are important. What a lawyer does is look into the law a previous court cases. They will find cases which are similar to your and show that people have been able to get away with particular behaviour in certain circumstances. They will use this as a way of demonstrating that your behaviour should also be treated in a similar way. This can be extremely useful.

For example if someone has got away without being convicted of a particular offence which is the same as the offence you have been accused of then they may be able to stop you being convicted as well. This sort of research is something which anyone could do but it could be a lot better to employ a lawyer to do it for you so that you can get an expert. They will be able to do it more quickly and have access to all of the necessary documentation which means that they should be able to do a much better job than you and increase your chances of winning the court case.
